In today's world, the ability to protect oneself is invaluable, especially for women. While the concept of women's self-defense garners varying opinions and controversies, the core idea remains undebated—empowerment. Many women express feelings of intimidation or embarrassment about joining a martial arts program or adopting self-defense strategies. However, it's crucial to move beyond these sentiments to cultivate a personal sense of security and empowerment. There is absolutely no substitute for training. Training is a must to develop knowledge and skill.
Self-defense extends beyond physical techniques—it's also about awareness, confidence, and the right mindset. Here we'll explore key self-defense techniques and address common concerns, aiming to empower you to take your safety into your own hands.
Situational awareness is arguably the most critical aspect of self-defense. It’s about being aware of your environment and any potential threats. By paying attention to your surroundings and avoiding distractions (like smartphones), you're less likely to be caught off guard. This doesn't mean living in fear but staying vigilant and prepared.
When faced with a potential threat, your immediate goal should be to create space between you and the aggressor. This can give you time to assess the situation and decide on your next step—be it escaping, calling for help, or preparing to defend yourself if escape isn't an option. Simple practices like stepping back assertively or using obstacles to your advantage can make a significant difference.
If an aggressor manages to grab you, knowing how to break free is essential. Tactics such as twisting your arm against the weakest part of their grip (usually the thumb) or using your weight to create momentum can help you escape. These techniques require practice to execute effectively under stress, highlighting the value of physical self-defense training.
Your intuition is a powerful tool. If something feels off, it probably is. Women often worry about overreacting or appearing rude when their gut signals danger. It's essential to prioritize your safety over politeness. Trusting your instincts can prevent compromising situations and provide an essential guide in uncertain scenarios.
The topic of using lethal force for self-defense is complex and varies by jurisdiction. It's generally considered a last resort when there's an immediate threat to your life. It could be argued that there is no better self defense protection tool than a firearm. Understanding the basics of firearms is imperative to knowing how to use a firearm when the time comes. Remember, the primary goal is always to escape the situation safely.
The controversy surrounding women's self-defense often stems from broader societal issues. The conversation shouldn't be about why women need to learn self-defense but how they can empower themselves to feel safer and more confident. To those feeling too embarrassed or intimidated to start: remember, taking the first step is the hardest part. Look for supportive, women-focused self-defense programs where you can train in a comfortable and empowering environment.
Empowerment through self-defense is a personal journey. It's about improving your awareness, understanding your strengths, and acknowledging your worth. While the path to self-defense can seem daunting, remember that you're not alone. Every woman has the right to feel safe and empowered. By focusing on these techniques and overcoming initial fears, you take the first steps toward not just defending yourself but reclaiming your peace of mind.
Since 2017 we've been on a quest to create what we believe to be the perfect non-metallic knife. The knife, in our opinion, should be versatile to carry, be readily accessible during times of extreme stress, and have the ability to create the damage needed on target to end a fight. Although we will never be completely satisfied, we believe the X2 is as close to perfect as Black Triangle can get in this moment.
Adaptable
The X2 is equipped with both a clipped and a static sheath, offering versatility in carrying styles to suit various needs and environments. The static line sheath can attach to a belt, belt loop, or drawstring, allowing for discreet placement in pants or shorts, a tactic effective against basic pat-downs. The clipped sheath is ideal for more conventional inside-the-waistband carrying. The knife itself includes a divot at the hilt for enhanced sheath retention. Each time the knife is sheathed (both static and clipped), the user can hear and feel the reassuring “click” of secure placement.
High-Performing
Under extreme stress, such as during physical confrontations, people often lose fine motor skills. The X2’s ergonomic design provides an index point for better control when only gross motor skills are reliable. The palm swell and finger choil on the handle ensure a firm, confident grip. Aesthetically pleasing and functionally effective, the blade’s geometry was rigorously tested. The size and shape of the wounds it can inflict are decidedly disadvantageous for any aggressor, should the knife be used in self-defense.
The Black Triangle X2 caters to both experienced and novice concealed carry users. It stands out as an exceptional product on its own and also makes a valuable addition to any collection. Advancing into 2024, the X2 will be available as a permanent staple starting on January 16th, 3pm Eastern Standard Time.
*Edit (3/18/24): Since the original Blog post, we have changed the X2 to come standard with clipped sheath only, with the option to buy both clipped and static sheath. Doing this has allowed us to lower the MSRP for our customers while still providing the maximum carry options.

]]>I wanted to close out 2023 with something new, and something old.
Since we modernized the Black Triangle Midnight Creeper designs, I've been asked once or twice by people to re-release the "OG" Creepers with the dagger bevels. Well, if people ask enough, sooner or later, one might cave in. And cave in I did. On December 15th at 5pm, we are bringing them back. The MK13 and MK23 are the modern interpretation of the original Black Triangle Midnight Creeper MK1 and MK2. These two knives will become a permanent product in our inventory.
There are slight length differences between the MK13, 23, and their MK1/MK2 counterparts. The knives are still machined from 1/4" black G10 and the widths are the same. The MK13 sits a little shorter than the MK1 and the MK23 has an even smaller footprint than the MK2M3, a great advantage if concealment is your primary concern.
While we are on the subject of giving the people what they want, another commonly asked question is how one is able to carry our products if one is wearing gym shorts, or wearing clothing that precludes the use of a belt. Its a quandary with a complicated solution-at least it was until now. Over the past year, our friends at Alterations.Limited had been collaborating with Ed Calderon on a non-metallic everyday carry (EDC) belt. I was fortunate enough to be brought on just before its release as a collaborator for what would become known as the Concert Companion Non-Metallic EDC Belt.
This belt goes above and beyond the requirement to carry our products. It is 100% metal-free and the silicone on the body-side of the belt is not unlike the material found on the inside bottom of our rash guards. This textile keeps the belt snug around the body if one is carrying is next to skin.
I've been asked if this belt can support a firearm. I usually tell people that this belt is designed for our G10 knives, however I have an employee that has been wearing the belt every day with jeans and carries a full-size pistol with no issues. This belt is not rigid at all, and that is what gives pause to recommend as a pistol belt. "Your mileage may vary", as they say.
I am so impressed by this belt that I had to make it available to my customer base. I have a limited quantity on hand, but if these are in demand enough, we will move forward with regular restocks.
The MK13, MK23 and Concert Companion EDC Belt will be available Friday December 15th at 5pm EST. Thank you for helping us make 2023 the best year yet at Black Triangle.

Let’s talk about Black Triangle G10 blade geometry & what it is/is not…
For the most part, our customer base understands that our G10 knives are point-driven/made for puncturing. This is because G10 is not the best material for making an edged instrument. Yes, you can grind an edge into a G10 knife, but it will not last anywhere near as long as the edge on a metallic knife. It is my opinion that G10 is strongest and most durable when used in a thrusting manner behind a point, not as a cutting implement.
Every tool we make gets tested in house, and every tool we bring to market has passed that test. We also take feedback in application by our end users; the people who have either used it in real life, or tested the knives they bought from us in classes such as the Ed’s Manifesto Organic Medium Entry. Our T&E cycle never ends and if you have been with us long enough, you can see the small changes we make to our products to make them better.
Every once in a while we get an email or message informing us that the product does not have an edge, or that it is useless. While we appreciate the feedback, I feel the need to put this out there to better inform those who may not already understand what we do or why we do it. As stated on the website, you are welcome to modify the knife however you wish, but it is our opinion that G10 is best used as a tool for puncturing, not cutting.
The bottom line is keeping the point robust will ensure success on target and lower the risk of tip deformity. Black Triangle G10 knives do not and more than likely will not have an edge on them. While there are other G10 knife options out there that have edges, we will stand by our claim that point-driven is the best application for this material for uses in self-defense. We take the matter of making a quality product very seriously when it may be needed in a dire situation. We make these products but we also carry them every day.

The X2 (ex-two) is a Black Triangle G10 production knife set to be released sometime before the end of 2023. Lucky for you, we are releasing it a little early as a collaboration with WrmFzy on Friday September 1st.
The knife itself is 1/4” thick purple G10 and features an unwrapped ergonomic handle with an index point at the pommel for a confident grip when drawing. The G10 color is a deep purple that pictures don't do justice to.
Dimensions
6.75” overall length
3.75” handle
3” blade
1/2” wide
The X2 will come with both a clipped and static sheath, providing the end user with maximum carry options. The sheaths are vacuum-formed from .080” transparent Kydex.
The Black Triangle x WrmFzy Purple X2 will come packaged inside our standard plastic VHS case with a twist—a cassette mixtape homage to the 90s Texas rap scene. Artwork and layout, as always, are done by FVTVREWAVE.
The X2 has been in development since the beginning of this year. We have put it through the ringer and it has demonstrated impressive performance against an organic medium.
On a personal note, I have the opportunity to carry and test many of our products, and I can say with high confidence that the X2 is one of the best items we've ever created.
The X2 collaboration with WF goes live on our website Friday September 1st at 12pm EST with an MSRP of $120.

]]>Bottom line up front: If you have checked luggage and are traveling domestically, its best that your Black Triangle G10 knife stays stored below the cabin. If you are not checking luggage, you may want to make arrangements with a trusted local contact at your final destination and send yourself your G10 knife. This is what I did on a recent trip to a major Southwest American city. If neither of these options are available, I strongly recommend taking the Weaponolgy course through Ed Calderon and learn about sourcing self-defense tools locally that are both inexpensive and easy to ditch.
BUT WHAT ABOUT MY SAFETY ON THE PLANE?!!!
This capability gap bothered me for a few years. One day during the COVID-19 Pandemic, I found myself inside of a large chain department store. I noticed several companies had capitalized on people's new found germaphobic tendencies and were selling tools that would help them open doors, hit elevator and ATM buttons without having to touch those surfaces with their hands. These innocuous designs reminded me of keychain impact devices that you'd find at a novelty store. So, we took inspiration from these little tools and cut one out of G10. This product became our G10 Touch Tool.
In the words of a customer, "I always take this when I travel to places where everything is outlawed." I couldn't have said it better myself.
Employment is easy, you just wrap your favorite hand around the tool and go to work.
Personally speaking, I have flown six times with a Touch Tool, and at this time it is TSA "friendly". We've priced the Touch Tool so that it is accessible to more customers. It's also an easy and practical item to gift to the people in your life. They can attach it to a keychain and have it at the ready just about any time.
Don't leave home without one!

]]>The release of the G10 Elvia and the restocking of the Soplete are tentatively scheduled for 7/14/23.
Ed Calderon became the first public figure to endorse Black Triangle when I sent him an original MK2 for testing in 2017, which fortunately passed. Since I started this brand six years ago, I have secretly desired to collaborate on a knife with Ed, but hesitated due to other knife makers already working with him. I believed that if we were to work together, it should be at his request.
In the summer of 2022, we had the opportunity to collaborate with Ed/Sneakreaper Industries on the Soplete. Honestly, this wasn't the product I had initially anticipated working on with Ed, but we enthusiastically seized the chance. We transformed a concept taught in his courses into a tangible product while simultaneously addressing the issue of activating the lighter/propellant with one hand. The Soplete is an excellent addition to a wayfarer's loadout and proves to be an exceptional tool for dealing with spider infestations.
A few months ago, Ed approached me about creating a G10 knife together, and I gladly agreed. After considering various design ideas, we decided that the size and profile should resemble the Kopis L-via.
The Black Triangle G10 Elvia is a monolithic, point-driven knife with three serrations at the hilt of the blade. These serrations have been tested and proven effective in ripping and creating a gnarly wound channel on the target.
The overall length of the G10 Elvia is 6 3/8" with a 2 1/2" blade and a 4" handle.
There will likely be an option to add a trainer knife and trainer sheath to your order.
The sheath is made of .080" black Boltaron and offers three carry methods: static line, pocket carry, and clipped IWB. Each G10 Elvia will come with both Technora and a clip/shock cord, providing the user with access to all three carrying options.
Similar to all Black Triangle G10 products, the Elvia will be packaged in a unique VHS sleeve/case and will include a foldout movie poster.
The tentative release date for the Black Triangle G10 Elvia and Soplete restock is 7/14/23.

MK25 is part of a project we have been working on for a while. We wanted to create a premium version of existing Black Triangle G10 knives, while not straying too far from the original concept. The first of this line is the MK25.
Major features
The G10 scales are designed in such a way that gives a slight nod to the wrapped knives. The criss-cross pattern is aesthetically pleasing and functional. Scales are tumbled and blasted so they do not create a hotspot while carrying inside the waistband.
With the G10 scales, we are able to create a vacuum-forming mold as opposed to our traditional process of pressing the thermoplastic directly to the wrapped knife. This vacuum-formed sheath gives users the option to re-sheath the knife with the bevel facing toward or away from the body. Having a vacuum-formed sheath, we are able to reduce the overall width of the sheath and reduce footprint. The sheath is trimmed with an accented sweat guard for maximum comfort while carrying.
Pommel jimping gives instant sensory confirmation (touch) when drawing from the sheath.

]]>Carrying a defensive tool inside the waistband using a clip or a strut is a pretty easy idea to digest- you just clip it to your belt and you’re good to go. I’ve found over the years that static line carry is a concept for users who like to think outside the boundaries of conventional thought. Like most techniques, each has its purpose and place. Today I’ll make the case for why you should consider static line carry and how to add it to your toolbox.
Versatile
Using a static line sheath, you’re able to carry your tool in more than one way.
The two most common uses of static line are around the neck (neck knife) and around the belt/loop.
The neck knife is an older concept still used today. Our Black Triangle G10 knives with static line sheaths come with Technora cordage. The total length of Technora included is 36”, which is a cut to have the option for neck carry.
Anchoring the static line near the waist allows the user to have the same benefits of carrying with a clipped sheath, with some extras. With the excess cordage, you are able to dangle the knife and sheath below the waistline, for situations such as a visual check or pat-down.
(Le Spike dangling outside of pant leg)
Dangling it down the pant leg alone may not defeat a pat-down, so it is best to have the tool close to genitals. (Please note that following these steps alone do not guarantee success. Many factors come into play, such as: your experience, demeanor, depth of search, competency of person conducting search, etc. These skills must be practiced in order to master them)
A third way to carry a static line sheath is by anchoring the cordage and feeding the sheath behind the belt to the front for an abdominal centerline draw. This gives access to the tool in a way similar to carrying a Clinch Pick or similar knife. Not for everyone, but the option is there.
(Serval Black Edition carried at abdominal centerline)
Concealment Techniques
For those choosing to carry a neck knife, I can offer one tip…our static line sheaths are shipped with the knot at the end opposite the sheath. If I ever carry around my neck, I like to move the knot in either direction toward the chest, so that it is not sticking out of the back of my shirt and drawing unwanted attention.
(Mini Senka neck knife outside hoodie. Note the position of knot moved away from neckline)
Anchoring the static line to a belt or belt loop can be done a number of ways, the way I am familiar with can be seen in the gif below:
(Donovan Mini anchored to belt)
When wrapping excess cordage around the belt, please keep in mind that the more line is left, the longer the draw it will take for the knife to leave the sheath. 2-3 inches above belt line is sufficient for both carrying in the waist band and for drawing from the sheath.
Pushing the knife below the belt line during an impromptu visual inspection is quick and easy.
If you want to anchor your static line without excess cordage wrapped around the belt, cutting the Technora in half to 18" is the magic number. Our static line tools are shipped with 36" of cordage, but we can ship 18". Please indicate in your order notes if you wish to have a shorter static line.
These products come with a static line carry option:
G10 Serval-Black Edition (currently unavailable)
Senka Mini (available 3/1/23)
(L to R: Serval-Black Edition, Senka Mini, Donovan Mini, Le Spike)
Using a static line sheath can be a foreign concept to new end users. Static line carry allows for traditional carry, as well as some advanced concealment options to give you a full range of low-visibility protection.

The Senka itself predates Black Triangle, being first introduced by Sentinel Concealment Gear as both a steel and non-metallic knife. The Sentinel G10 Senka was my first non-metallic knife and the one I unofficially carried during my time working in the private security industry. Sentinel coincidentially produced the first two batches of Black Triangle G10 knives (MK1 & MK2) before he closed up shop.
(author's Sentinel Senka)
Fast forward to fall 2020, Black Triangle moved into a new facility in Chesapeake, VA. I was looking for a new product offering in our line of non-metallic knives. I got permission from SCG and we began production of our own version of the G10 Senka. The original G10 Senka was ground to an edge and featured a fine tip. Through user feedback we learned that a) edges aren't as effective on G10 and b) fine tips have a tendency to break easily.
Our version of the Senka has the top-down appearance of a knife with edges, but in reality the edges are absent. The blade geometry comes to a taper at the tip without compromising the structural integrity of the knife, something we would later find out to be a very good thing.
At first glance, the Senka is a very attractive knife. The double bevel is aesthetically pleasing as much as it is effective in its penetration. We have tested every Black Triangle knife and came to the conclusion that Senka is a top performer in both penetration and tip resilience.
Senka is a Black Triangle favorite and it is also a favorite with our industry partners. We have collaborated with both Gypsy Walters and Tactical Distributors on the Senka. The GW collab was OD G10 with brown paracord wrap sheathed in Multicam Arid. The TD collaboration was Earth Brown G10, burgundy (not pictured) & forest green wrap sheathed in Flektarn. Both collaborations are no longer available, but they show up from time-to-time on the secondary market.

]]>The Halloween season is upon us, and if you have been following us for a while, you know it’s our favorite time of the year.
We chose October 1st as a release date so that you could be equipped in time for Halloween fun.
We spent much of this year trying to make an idea work for this year’s drop. Unfortunately it didn’t work out and we missed the deadline to order orange G10. If you’re here and wondering why that didn’t happen, this is it. We will definitely be doing orange next year.
The knife we did last year was a great success. I wanted to recreate the iconic kitchen knife, but make it look more like a kitchen knife and less like a Black Triangle knife. What we came up with is gnarly.
The Hell Child 2 is 8 inches overall length, with a 3 3/4 inch blade. The grind is convex but only on one side. Towards the tip on the spine is a swedge that makes the Hell Child 2 one of our pokiest G10 knives to date.
This year, we are giving you the choice between a handle wrapped with black or orange Paracord. A recurring request from last year’s drop was to have the Hell Child in all black. Both color ways come sheathed in orange thermoplastic.
As always, the VHS artwork is done by FVTVREWAVE. He nailed the layout and was able to capture what I had envisioned for the cover art. We were both thinking of a Poltergeist/Exorcist vibe, and I think it worked.
To finish out the design trio is a sticker designed by the one and only Gypsy Walters. A mark of any good artist is the ability to translate the client’s intent in a piece of art. The antagonist in Hell Child 2 adorns many costumes throughout this fictitious horror film, yet we chose the skeleton as a nod to Cobra Kai in Karate Kid and Glenn Danzig/Misfits.
In addition to the Hell Child 2 release, we are dropping two new garment designs as well as restocking an older design.

All three designs are available in Canvas Unisex Tee, District Made Ladies Perfect Weight Tee and Gildan Heavy Blend Hoodie.
If you made it this far, you’re joining the ranks of those who will now have advanced knowledge of my editing error on the VHS synopsis. It reads “traumatizedby tiny terrors”. I want you to have a little laugh every time you read this knowing that this fuckup lives rent free in my head for the next 6 months.
