How to Choose the Best Non-Metallic Knife for Self-Defense

If you came here looking for a G10 knife from Black Triangle, you might be overwhelmed by our selection of more than 10 different options. What makes the best knife? The answer is going to vary depending on the end user. Below are some considerations when making a choice.

Before we start, I'd like to address that non-metallic knives have been made from carbon fiber, injection-molded Zytel and other glass-filled polymers. However, to this day, G10 remains supreme. It is strong, rigid, lightweight and extremely durable. It's messy to make but that is our problem and not yours!

Size Matters (and Not How You Think)

Bigger is not always better! A larger tool may give you more grip and reach, but if it is uncomfortable enough that you stop carrying it, none of that matters.

Accessibility and concealability are a careful balance. The handle should be large enough to grip securely without compromising the concealed nature of the knife.

Compact knives include: Omega-IV, PCT-L, and Donovan Mini.

Standard-sized knives: S4, Serval, XM-12, Donovan, Liberator.

Goldilocks Knives: X2, MK2M3, Kiridashi Belt Knife.

Sheath and Carry Method

The knife is only half of the system. Static carry, clipped inside-the-waistband (IWB) carry and pocket carry all work, but the best option depends on your clothing, body type and where you want the tool to be.

An IWB clip is an easily digestible concept: you clip the sheath onto your belt inside your pants and the knife disappears. With static line, you need a base level of understanding of how to hitch the cordage to your belt, belt loop, etc. Pocket carry is good for concealment but can add time to the draw, which is something worth considering with a self-defense tool.

Retention on the sheath should be secure enough that the knife doesn’t fall out during normal movement, but not so tight that you have to fight the sheath during the draw. All Black Triangle knives are checked for proper retention before being packaged.
